South Korea sent its advance inspection team to the North, Wednesday, for last-minute preparations for the reunion of separated families slated for Aug. 20 to 26.

The 18-member team led by Lee Jong-chol, a senior Red Cross official, is tasked with checking the facilities, including accommodations and the banquet hall, of the North's scenic resort at Mount Geumgang on the east coast.

The team members include officials from the Ministry of Unification and Hyundai Asan _ the operator of the now-suspended Mount Geumgang tour project.

They will consult with North Korea and finalize the schedule, travel route and other details concerning the family members who were separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.

"The inspection team left Seoul in the morning and headed to Mount Geumgang after reporting to the customs and immigration office on the east coast," the Ministry of Unification said. "They will stay there and support the reunion event until it ends."

The ministry said it will pay special attention to the health and safety of the divided family members, many of them in their 80s and older, amid the unprecedented heat wave that is still sweeping the Korean Peninsula.

The family reunions will take place for the first time since October 2015 amid inter-Korean reconciliatory efforts, such as the two summits between President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and the forthcoming summit in September.

In their first summit at Panmunjeom, April 27, the leaders of the two Koreas agreed to resume the cross-border reunion over the urgent nature of humanitarian exchanges.

Helping the divided families meet their loved ones has been South Korea's priority concern irrespective of the rapidly changing security situation on the Korean Peninsula.

The two Koreas jointly hosted 20 rounds of face-to-face reunions since the first-ever summit in June 2000 between President Kim Dae-jung and North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, father of current leader Kim Jong-un.

In the 21st round of reunions, 93 South Koreans will reunite with their North Korean relatives from Aug. 20 to 22 at Mount Geumgang, and then 88 North Koreans will have a reunion with South Korean relatives from Aug. 24 to 26 at the same venue.

The first group of 93 South Koreans will gather in the border city of Sokcho in Gangwon Province, Aug. 19. They will be briefed by the South's Red Cross officials before heading to Mount Geumgang the next day.
